My dad and I will be going through Zups in June for a trip. I had planned to have them drop us at Bottle Portage then we'd head to Crooked Lake from there(I know some really nice spots on that Lake). But with such an opportunity to head into waters I have never seen I am wondering if I should just stay in the Quetico rather then heading back into the US? What is the price of the permit/fishing License? Will I need a sticker for my canoe for the Quetico? Also, does anyone have suggestions for finding a out of the way lake that has walleyes and maybe trout?
I don't want a large Farva... I want a GD liter-a-cola!

MMmmmm! Toby,
The permit isn't too bad but the camping fees are $15or $18 a night per person I think. Fishing licence?? $26
I'll a little foggy on the exact costs but I'm sure Journeyman will remember..... I'll get back with the facts.
There are lots of great lakes in that area for fishing.
The permit is the key factor and they are already selling June's permits.....5 months in advance....If you are using an outfitter you might call them and try and get a permit.
No permit = No trip.

If you plan on just staying on Crooked, why even bother with Quetico permits? Crooked is a very nice lake, but if you're getting a Quetico permit you may as well look into some other options. If Crooked is your plan, don't even bother with a Quetico permit. The daily cost for a Quetico permit out of LLC ranger station is 16 bucks apiece per day. But if you want to stay stateside at all, it'll cost you even more for the overnight permit.

I am not getting the Quetico Permit. I am doing the tow from Zups however to Bottle Portage. The only reason I am doing a tow is because I don't want to over do it with my 66 year old dad.
I had thought about getting a Quetico Permit and just staying up there but after asking my dad what he wanted to do he just said he'd like to go to Crooked.

That will be a good trip. Research the sites so you get a real good one. I basecamped with my 65 year old Dad in 2000 on Ogish and it was fun to take fishing daytrips.
Also, make sure he has a nice seat pad and backrest in the canoe. Have a good trip.
