How many of you have met some wonderful fellow travelers on your trips?

This year, when my son and I were coming back from the north part of Kawnipi we met Ron and Sharon from Ely who were on a trip from Atikokan to Prairie Portage where their son, who works for one of the Outfitters on Moose Lake, was going to meet them Monday afternoon at 5. We met on the portage from Kawnipi into Keewatin Lake. So, we did the three portages with them into the upper part of Agnes. Naturally, we struck up a conversation and learned a little bit about each other as we did the portages. The first question I asked them was did they know about this website? They didn't, so I told them about it. I'd like to meet some of you out on the lake some day. They asked me how long I'd been doing this kind of thing. I said "30 years." Ron said, "I thought so."

After we got to Agnes, we went our separate ways. This was Sunday, about noon. Ted and I paddled the length of Agnes, camping about an hour north of the two long portages into Meadow and Sunday Lakes. Ron and Sharon, we noticed as we stopped on an island for lunch, took the portage in mid-Agnes into the S-chain lakes.

Ted and I had arranged a pick-up at Prairie Portage for mid-day Tuesday, but the wind was so light on Monday, we decided to paddle to Prairie Portage Monday and tell someone at the portage to call our Outfitter to come and get us.

As we paddled down Burke to the portage there, I told Ted that the channel to the right would be where we would be coming if we had done the S-chain portages. He said, maybe we'll see Ron and Sharon. I said that's not likely. But we did. Just as we came to the turn down the channel to the portage, there they were coming. So, we made the Burke Lake Yellow Brick Road Portagge together. It was fortunate, too, because they called our Outfitter for us. Otherwise, we didn't see anyone at Prairie Portage to ask to call for us. When we got there, Sharon came over and helped us carry some stuff to the other side. Over there Willy, her son, gave Ted and me a cold beer. How's that for kindness!

I'm attaching a picture of Ron and Sharon on Burke Lake Portage and one of Ted and me with our beers.
