Hello, I've been looking through this site and the Friends of the BWCA site for some route ideas. The route guide has been very helpful. I'm heading to the BWCAW in June with my scout troop. We have about a dozen people, so we are splitting into two groups. I'm trying to come up with two routes, each for 5 days. We will be starting out of Ely, so I've been looking at Moose Lake, Snowbank Lake, Farm Lake, and Lake One as possibilities. Ideally, one route would cover more ground (four days plus a layover) and the other might have two campsites, spending two nights at each. Those are ideals, but I'm open to suggestions, including other entry points in the general Ely area. The two groups don't need the same ones, but if they are near each other it would help with logistics.

Two that have caught my eye are the Kawishiwi Triangle, which I hope we could add day trips from, and also one suggested by VNO - a big loop beginning at Moose Lake, working in a big clockwise loop to Ensign, Ashigan, Jordan, Ima, Thomas, Kiana, around through 4, 3, 2, 1 to exit at Lake One Landing.

I know I'm late to the game getting permits, but are there any other good suggestions? In particular, what worthwhile day trips would be good from the Triangle Route?

I think your plans are good. On the Moose entry, consider you can portage and paddle back to Moose entry parking lot. May simplify things.

I'm not big on so many layover days with Scouts. Idle hands and all that. The Kawishiwi triangle is a good route with several options for entry. Consider going into the Gabros and Bald Eagle.

Thanks! My rational for two layover days on the triangle route is that I hope to basecamp and do side trips instead of breaking camp each day. I like the looks of exploring the Gabro lakes to add to the trip. Thanks for the suggestion!I've split the groups up putting the go getters together and the chill kids in another. The kids who aren't to have idle hands are on the Moose Lake Loop. For the Triangle group, I worry more about them keeping their books dry for five days.

I just tried getting entry permits for any reasonable Kawishiwi launches on the day I need, and no luck, so I picked up Fall Lake permit just to make sure I have something. I'm not crazy about a big lake with powerboats, but we'll make due. Any four day trips from there that are solid? Preferably a more relaxed pace. This group is not a bunch of milage hounds. I'll be looking things up in the background, but any tips are welcome!

Head north toward the Basswood River and get out of the motorboat zone. The Basswood River is a beautiful area with waterfalls and great fishing.
